About the Matanuska River Watershed What the Coalition is Working to Preserve Castle Mountain Fault and Earthquakes Chickaloon Coal Field- UPDATE!
|
The Matanuska River watershed has untold mountains of resources. Moose, caribou and bears... lynx, wolves and wolverine... raptors, gamebirds and songbirds... beaver, salmon and trout... stands of birch, cottonwood and spruce... clean water, fresh air and good soil... blueberries, rosehips, and cranberries... and thousands of years of culture. Each of these elements is precious in its own right. And each one is at risk due to improperly designed development projects. There are many other reasons that the people of the Matanuska have determined to call this place "Home". When you ask us why we live here, we say... It's the most beautiful place imaginable- Quiet... the most you ever hear is a chainsaw or a dog barking- You can see all of the night sky, because there's no light pollution- Truly wild lands are right outside the door- There's no traffic- It's a safe place to raise a family- Really, if you think about it, all these things are fragile. They require planning for safe-keeping. Most of our existing local businesses, and also the kind of businesses we would like to draw to this area are conscious of these facts. The owners realize that tourism and locals are the heart of our economy. To destroy this base would be the demise of our neighborhoods and everything we have been cultivating. Lend us your support to sustain the quality of the Matanuska basin. |
